Paolo ZANIRATO received his doctor degree in 1972 from the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry at the Bologna University, where he was postdoctoral fellow until 1975. Within the period 1975-1997 lecturer in 'Synthetic Organic and Inorganic Chemistry'. In 1980 he became an Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the same Faculty and since the 1997 reader in 'Experimental Organic Chemistry'. Starting from the 2002 to 2008 also temporary reader in 'Colour Chemistry', ‘Heterocyclic Chemistry’ and ‘Cosmetics’ at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Chieti. A CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) annual grant was awarded in December 1979 to begin work in collaboration with Prof. Salo Gronowitz at the Chemical Centre of the University of Lund (Sweden) and in March 2008 he was awarded by a four month RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) international grant to begin work with Prof. Alan R. Katritzky at the University of Florida (Gainesville).  He has supervised numerous final year undergraduate research projects and he has 80 papers to his credit to date including full research paper published on the national and international journals (see: Reference list on these topic), patent (1), communication and oral/poster (22) presented at national and international Conferences especially in the area of free-radical chemistry and heterocyclic chemistry.

He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and Senior Member of the Italian Society of Chemistry (SCI).  His current research interests include synthetic, spectroscopic and mechanistic aspects of the chemistry of nitrogen-functionalized systems both carbo-and hetero-cyclic as well as molecular modelling on the structure-reactivity correlation. A strong emphasis has been placed on the synthesis of heteroaryl and heteroaroyl azido systems and on studies of their reactions under thermodynamic, kinetic and mechanistic points of view.

Actually, is Corresponding Member of the Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna and Member of the Editorial Staff  Journal ‘La Chimica e l’Industria’.

Principali linee di ricerca:

1-Metodologie sintetiche, proprietà spettroscopiche e molecolari di arili ed eteroaril azidi variamente

    sostituiti per usi industriali e farmaceutici.

 

2-Sintesi di coloranti termo-, elettro- e fotocromici mediante modifiche strutturali reversibili di cromofori

   noti e non.

 

3-Impiego della calorimetria e dell'analisi termica nello studio delle proprietà chimiche di composti organici.

 

 

La sintesi di sistemi aromatici ed eteroaromatici sostituiti con gruppi 'pseudoalogeni' (-N3; -NCO, -NCS ecc.) costituisce una primaria linea di sviluppo per la produzione di nuove molecole (semplici, macro e polimeriche) contenenti altre funzionalità azotate; le cui proprietà strutturali, chimiche e fisiche saranno studiate per via spettroscopica e mediante modelli molecolari.  Promettenti risultati sono attesi dalla trasformazione strutturale di taluni gruppo cromofori mediante formazione di cromogeni coniugati reversibilmente sensibili alle variazioni termiche, elettriche e fotochimiche. La potenzialità esplosiva di alcune azidi organiche e l'eventuale dipendenza dalla struttura molecolare saranno studiate mediante decomposizione termica via analisi calorimetrica, spettrometria di massa ed analisi strutturale-elettronica.
